From Granny Knits to Jacqui P… a change

I first launched Granny Knits in 2003 with a collection of knitwear in Selfridges, which I had designed and hand knitted.  It had a nostalgic old school feel – and clashing coloured accessories garnished with vintage brooches.  It was the start of my own designs – away from the large fashion corporations that I had worked for in previous years.

The name came from a mixture of my Grandma Dora – and her influence to my creative life, and an ironic nod to the nostalgic memories people had of garish creations made by many a Granny as gifts for Christmas (think Brigit Jones and the Christmas Jumpers).  My view was that old school home crafts needed a modern makeover…  no longer macrame and bad jumpers, a new generation could create bigger brighter things…  and so my crafty journey began..  with knitted pieces sold in boutiques.

In 2005,  I visited Palm Springs in California and discovered a whole community of crafters – using old techniques in new mad ways.  They worked mainly in ceramics and textiles, with main influences coming from the 50s-70s hey day of the town.  There, I met a textile artist working in needlepoint, making graphic cushions and wall hangings and I was hooked.  But basketweave took too long for someone with my lack of patience – so I resorted to cross stitch, sewing and printed textiles

For 3 years these crafty ventures stayed as a ‘for home alone’ pass time as our fledgling interiors business Pearl and Earl was launched and flourished, but in 2009 I took some of my cushions to add to our display at Top Drawer – and the demand from Trade was so great we launched our first kits.  In 2010 I was approached by the then editor of Cross Stitcher to create some designs for the magazine and suddenly I discovered that I had a bigger audience for my work that I imagined… and so Cross Stitch and textiles have taken over my crafty life, and sadly the name Granny Knits seemed to generate confusion.

So in January 2012 we made the big decision to change our trading name to Jacqui P.  Our website and packaging is getting a makeover to tie in with the new message … and we hope that you all like what we will be unveiling over the next few months.  Lots of new kits, crafts and ideas are flowing… and we cant wait to share.

Help us spread the message by being a little social.. and we hope you enjoy what we have planned…

Happy Stitching
